In korean culture, a baby’s first birthday party is thrown quite sumptuously usually at a rented restaurant to celebrate the baby’s good health for his first year here on Earth. The first birthday party in Korean is called DOL party. This picture shows one of the fun moments of DOL party. Each object on the table represents different professions he might be doing in the future. Money means that he’ll be a rich man like CEO of a company, a soccer ball means he’ll be a great athletic, a pencil means he’ll be a scholar etc. By grabbing one object, it would determine his profession when he grows up. Many guests typically shout to the babies “Grab the money!” which is what’s happening in this picture. Notice the location of the money. It’s conveniently placed right in front of him for easy access! This baby kind of looked around to gather some consensus then went for the money making everyone happy especially the parents!
And he also grabbed a mouse, too. I’m not quite sure what the mouse represents. Maybe he’ll be a next Bill Gates? It was a fun time!
